If your vehicle does not start there is a high chance you have an issue with the vehicles starter motor. We can test your starter motor, replace the starter motor if required and inspect flywheel on the vehicle.
How much is it to replace a starter motor?
The starter motors responsibility is to turn your engine so it starts the engine. The starter motor is what you hear first when you turn your engine key. If it is not working properly then the car won’t be able to start.
The starter motor is bolted onto the gearbox housing and engages the flywheel when the ignition key is in the crank position. The starter solenoid that is mounted to the starter motor triggers the operation of the starter motor. The gear on the starter motor engages the flywheel which then starts the engine. Once this is complete the starter motors operation is complete and disengages.
Inside your starter motor there are a range of component’s that contribute to its operation. Like most types of electric motors your starter motor uses a magnetic field and brushes to turn the starter motor in a single direction.
Usually if you have a faulty starter motor the problem will likely be damage with brushes or within the solenoid. There is a possibility it could also be the armature that is worn or damaged.
Sydney Auto Installs can recondition or supply and fit new starter motors.
The average cost of replacing a starter motor starts at $400 but this price will depend on the make and model of your car. Depending on the price of the parts to recondition a new option may be a better option but this needs to be determined by case by case.
Additional components that you may require replacing could be
1. Battery
2. Battery cables
3. Mounting bolts
4. Battery terminals and connections
Replacing the starter motor must always be done by disconnecting the vehicles battery first. Sometimes you will be able to remove it from the top of the engine but generally speaking the starter motor will be removed from the bottom of the vehicle either on a hoist or by jacking up the vehicle. The wiring on the starter motor will need to be removed and inspected for any bad connections. Once you are ready to install the new starter motor all the wiring will need to be reconnected and then tested.
When do we replace the starter motor?
The most common noise a faulty starter motor makes is a clicking sound when the vehicles key is in the start position and the engine does not start.
If the starter motor is turning but not engaging you may have an issue with a worn flywheel or a worn gear on the starter motor.
If the starter motor grinds when engaging you may need to look at the starter motor and flywheel.
A faulty starter motor will prevent you from starting your engine. If you are experiencing any of the items above its a good idea to call us so we can diagnose the problem as soon as you realise to prevent further damage. Once we remove the starter motor we can check all components.
If the starter motor can be reconditioned we can provide a quote on this otherwise we will provide you a quotation to supply and fit a new starter motor.
How long does it take to replace a starter motor?
Depending on the type of vehicle it would normally take any where between 2 to 4 hours to replace. This can vary between vehicles as it will be determined by how accessible the starter motor is.
